On the morning of Thursday, February 15, 2001 I was informed that the notorious Fred Phelps was going to picket the \aut\ BAR on Saturday, February 17. By that afternoon I had formed a plan that was non-confrontational, and turned his message of hate into a positive event for the community.
We decided to pledge $1.00 for every minute Fred was picketing the bar to the Washtenaw Rainbow Action Project (WRAP).
The drive was enormously successful. See the Press Release detailing the success.
The Press Release took on a life of its own. I have heard individually from hundreds of people and dozens of publications. Most importantly, I am hearing from many communities who want to replicate the effort.
We can use each successful campaign to build more successful campaigns in the future (Thank You Madison, Wisconsin for the brilliant name, Every Minute Counts).
As this builds, I am collecting resources and they will be added to this page. If Fred is coming to YOUR community, contact me for more information.
